Compass Paystub Taxes for Hourly Workers
Compass associates see taxes on their weekly paystubs. Kitchen, school, and hospital workers check federal tax, state tax, Social Security, Medicare, and local taxes. Reviewing paystubs helps you plan money and catch mistakes.
Federal Income Tax
The system takes federal tax based on your W-4 choices.
- Single with zero allowances takes more tax.
- Married with kids takes less.
Your paystub shows the tax for this week and year-to-date (YTD) totals.
Example: $640 gross pay for a single worker takes about $65 for federal tax. Update your W-4 in the PeopleHub. The next stub shows changes.
State Income Tax
State tax depends on your work site.
- California may take 8% in higher brackets.
- Texas takes zero.
- Some sites add city or school taxes.
Paystubs show state tax for this week and YTD totals. If you work in more than one state, the stub shows separate lines.
Social Security
Social Security takes 6.2% of wages.
- 2026 cap: $168,600
- Example: $640 gross pay takes $39.68 per week
- YTD total counts toward the cap
- High earners stop seeing Social Security tax after the cap
Medicare
Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages.
- No cap on regular Medicare
- Extra 0.9% applies to wages over $200,000
Combined FICA taxes (Social Security + Medicare) take 7.65% of wages.
Local Taxes
Some sites add local or school taxes.
- Example: Hospital district 1%, school levy 0.5%
- Paystub shows each tax separately
- Total can reach 12% of gross pay
Pre-Tax Deductions
Pre-tax deductions lower taxable income.
- 401(k)
- Health insurance
Example: $50 401(k) contribution lowers $640 gross pay to $590 before tax. Paystubs show these deductions above tax lines.
Year-to-Date Totals
YTD totals show taxes taken all year.
- January shows week one
- December predicts exact W-2 amounts
Check YTD totals to spot mistakes and avoid surprises.
